Today is UNESCO’s International Mother Language Day, a celebration of linguistic diversity and multilingualism around the world.
So celebrate! Speak in your own mother tongue, whatever it is, and/or shout it from the rooftops.
And then rejoice in the fact that your native language is only one of 6,909 known living languages on the planet.
Finally, celebrate by finding someone whose first language is different from your own, and see what you can learn from them. Diversity presents us all with opportunity; it’s up to us to take advantage of it!
Multilingualism is a source of strength and opportunity for humanity. It embodies our cultural diversity and encourages the exchange of views, the renewal of ideas and the broadening of our capacity to imagine. -Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director General
